Is an Atheistic Monastery feasible?
Would there be something ethically wrong with starting an atheistic monastery? It would basically be centered on contemplation of science and evolution. Also maybe mix some bonsai in. I've always wanted to peruse a "monk" lifestyle; the obvious problem is I would have to designate myself to some kind of religion, where my belief is that of none are correct. I'm not saying all religions in their entirety are incorrect, for example some of the best examples of moral codes come from religious teaching, (however new research has suggested that basic moral value is indicative to evolution and the only purpose of morals is to keep the human race from completely annihilating themselves thus guaranteeing the continuation of our genes). Anyway, what is your opinion?
a monastery is ONE of the three traditional ways to higher consciousness. For us, living in the west, the religious way is not a viable pursuit. The first way is the way of the Fakir, who works on his physical body to achieve consciousness. The monk works on his emotions. The yogi works on his mind. ALL of them require a immediate committment at the beginning which is also unacceptable.
There is, however, a fourth way, that the other three ways do not know about. The fourth way takes place in the ordinary conditions of a persons life and allows one to see where they are going before deciding IF that particular way is for them. It is faster than the other ways because it works on all the centers at the same time, instead of JUST the body, or JUST the emotions or JUST the intellect. It also avoids the trappings of religion, which is mostly devotion. Devotion won't work in the fourth way. The fourth way requires a different knowlege and a different effort.
