Drink in the magnificence of the Plum Garden at Wuxi
“The Plum Garden Carved Stone” reads the 1.5 ton stone worked by the Garden’s previous owner Rong Desheng, which stands majestically at the entrance to one of China’s most enchanting attractions. Situated at the foot of Hun Hill, this extraordinary Garden in West Wuxi, is home to thousands of plum trees of more than 40 different varieties, a breathtaking landscape of flora and plum bonsais, some of which have existed for over a century.
A private residence from the days of the Qing Dynasty, the Plum Garden now lies over a vast expanse and offers several picturesque stops from which to enjoy the fascinating view and feast of fragrances. These include the Tianxin Terrance, a platform of yellow stones nestled in by a charming stream and lush plum flowers. The Huroan Cave and the Qingfen Xuan are also worth a visit, as is the Plum Cultural Museum. Climb up to the tallest peak at Plum Garden – the Mei Pagoda- for a stunning view of an ocean of plum blossoms and the serene Lake of Taihu.
It is in spring that the plum blossoms bloom in all their glory and the garden makes one think of a doorway to heaven. Autumn is also a wonderful time to visit when the colors turn to magnificent shades of gold, red and brown and an invigorating whiff of the sweet perfume of osmanthus trees will have one in a swoon.
The garden lies across mountainous terrain for the most part; a fitting backdrop for the rare flowers, trees and grasslands that find their origins in the far flung corners of the world. The Plum Garden is an idyllic and poetic setting and romance is evident everywhere, from the splendid aroma to the spectacular views. The garden has also been the inspiration for many famous poems and paintings.
