Growing Outdoor Bonsai Indoors?
Is there anything that can be done to successfully grow outdoor bonsai indoors, such as by setting up a small greenhouse with supplemental lighting? I live in a small condo, and have been growing some typical indoor bonsai, but I'd like to try some outdoor species like Maple, Elm, Beech, Sycamore, etc.
The best answer really depends on 2 factors. (1) What growth zone are you in. (2) What growth zone (light, heat, cold etc) is appropriate for the plant you are growing as a Bonsai.
The typical bonsai grower matches his care to the plant and how he has planted it. Therefore an outdoors type plant/tree will need outdoors time with some protection from cold weather because of the size of the growth dish and the trimmed roots.
Note: In Japan the typical grower has protected outdoor growth areas where he/she keeps a series of plants (multiple varies and kinds of plants that have been bonsai'd). The bonsai artists I knew in Japan would keep a tree inside on display for a short time, then would take that plant outside. He would bring a different one if for the next display.
