My Benjamina Ficus Bonsai has very tiny insects in the pot?
Do to a cool draft, my bonsai currently has no leaves (except for about 7 leaf buds) and yesterday, while looking for more after watering, I noticed a variety of minuscule insects roaming within the pot. They are not ON the tree itself, but I'm afraid they may be eating the roots.
The bugs are about a millimeter long, they are a brown/black color, and are shiny. I believe they have wings, but I have yet to see them fly.
Could you please identify them and help me with getting rid of them? (With OUT hurting my tree anymore?)
Thank you.
Hello fellow gardener! I'm not sure what the insect might be but you could mix up a *natural* spray that would most likely send any pest packing. Buy you a spray bottle and fill it almost entirely with warm water. To that add 1 teaspoon lemon dish washing liquid, 1 teaspoon lemon ammonia & 1 teaspoon antiseptic mouthwash. The dish washing liquid will kill pretty much any insect it comes in contact with. The ammonia is a wonderful source of nitrogen and encourages leafy plant growth. The antiseptic mouthwash destroys disease germs. Be sure you get *lemon* scented products (the dish washing liquid & ammonia) because for some reason, bugs hate the lemon scent! Spray the entire plant...leaves, trunk-everything. Also spray well on the soil and the edge of the pot.
One of the best ways to prevent insect attacks on your plants is to keep them strong and healthy. Adding ammonia to this spray really helps with this. You may use this spray as often as you wish as nothing in it will harm your plant. Oh yes, almost forgot...this dish washing liquid will also help to aerate the soil by breaking up the hardened clumps with time.
Good Luck!
