Creating a bonsai forest… any tips?
Ok so I have lots and LOTS of bonsai trees and recently decided to creat a “bonsai forest” of maple seedlings. Basically I want to keep them all in the same pot and make a mini forest.
Has anyone made one of these?
Is it unhealthy for them to be bonsaied in the same pot?
Any tips about trimming the roots and repotting when it’s time if their root grow together?
Any tips at all???
If you know nothing about plants please don’t answer this… cuz I won’t find you clever…
There are lots of books and websites on the subject. Some of the more famous bonsai, like John Naka’s Goshin is a forest planting. Each tree represents one of his grandchildren.
So, no, there isn’t any reason to not do it. I have several small plantings of liquidambar forest bonsai myself.
A lot of forest plantings aren’t actually repotted. It’s very tricky to move the several trees at the same time with none of them getting damaged. They are usually potted together in a very shallow tray and tend to remain there.
Tips: Always plant an odd number of trees for a more natural effect. Pick a large tree as the focal point, and put in the front of the planting, stagger the other smaller trees behind and to the sides.
