Binomial name
Pinus pineal.
The pinea (Italian) pine (umbrella pine) (Pinus, Pinaceae) is a species of pine native to southern Europe in the Mediterranean region. This tree has been exploited for its edible fruit since prehistoric times. There is also a widespread horticultural tree, besides being cultivated for its seeds.
Juvenile (left) and adult foliage of Stone Pine
The pines can exceed 25 m in height, although usually a bit smaller, 12-20 m normal. It has a very distinctive umbrella-shaped, with a short trunk and very broad, almost smooth flat round crown. The bark is thick, reddish-brown and deeply fissured in broad vertical plates. The leaves are medium green soft needles, in two packages, and 10-20cm long (exceptionally up to 30 cm). Young trees of 5 to 10 years age have juvenile leaves that are very different, alone (without partner), 2-4cm long, glaucous blue-green, mature leaves are mixed with juvenile leaves of the fourth or fifth year on, almost entirely replaced in year 10. Young leaves are also produced in the new growth after injury, as a meeting apart in old trees.
The cones are broad ovoid, 8-15cm long, and take 36 months to mature, more than any other pine. The seeds (pine nuts, pi? The Pinhas? Is or nuts) are large, 2 cm long, light brown, with black powder coating rubs easily and have a rudimentary wing drop 4-8mm easily. The wing is ineffective for wind dispersal, and seeds are dispersed by animals, causing mainly by blue-winged magpie, but in recent history largely by humans.

The original range of pine, including Spain, Portugal and North Africa, including major parts of the Sahara Desert, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, where the climate was wetter. It has been cultivated large scale at least 6,000 years for the edible seeds. These were the elements of trade since early historical times. It is often cultivated and naturalized in all the Mediterranean region, provided that it is often considered as indigenous, while more recently (since about 1700) was introduced to other climate zones Mediterranean. It is now naturalized in South Africa (where is the list of invasive species) and often planted in California, Australia, North and South Western Europe Scotland. On the East Coast of the United States can survive as far north New Jersey, but generally cause substantial damage to their leaves during the winter in the North. copies grown in small or large pots are used for bonsai, and seedlings are also very active year in the table 20-30cm high Christmas tree.
